Burning Man 10 Principles for beginners

Ten ideas, in our words

These are paraphrases, not the official text. Read the official 10 Principles before you quote them at anyone. They are a culture, not a terms-of-service doc, and they are not in a ranked order on that page.

  1. Radical Inclusion. Anyone can be part of it. Strangers are the point, not a problem to screen.
  2. Gifting. You give because you want to. A gift is not a trade in a costume.
  3. Decommodification. The week is the experience, not a brand activation. That is also why the affiliate links on this site are labeled.
  4. Radical Self-reliance. You are the one who brings the water, the food, and the exit plan.
  5. Radical Self-expression. What you offer comes from you. The person next to you still gets their own space.
  6. Communal Effort. The city is a group project. Nobody is hired to build your wonder for you.
  7. Civic Responsibility. Don't be a hazard. The people who host this also have to follow the law.
  8. Leaving No Trace. If it was not on the playa before you, it leaves with you. Glitter included.
  9. Participation. There is no audience. You make the thing by doing it.
  10. Immediacy. Be in the dust, in your body. A feed is not a substitute.
